Today’s National Health Blog Post Topic: Call BS on something. What’s something that is just ridiculous?

Before you delve into this post, let me clarify a few things.

  1. I do not have a suggestion for how to fix what I’m bitching about. Most of the time that stops me, but not tonight.
  2. I have awesome health insurance and I love my health insurance.
  3. I understand that oodles of restrictions and weird guidelines are placed on insurance companies. I do not understand what employees there must deal with every day.

But. What the hell insurance companies? How do you have the right to dictate how many times a person can test their blood sugar and with which technology? That’s like me telling you how many times a week you get to change your underwear, and of what style! My strips are more important to me than underwear. And I love underwear!

Why do you get to say someone can’t use a CGM or an insulin pump? You do not know what works best for each person to manage their health. You just don’t. Up until a few years ago, I tested 10 to 20 times a day. Now I use a CGM, and that is better for me.

Up until a year ago I used Lantus and Humalog, injecting five to ten times a day. Now I use a pump, and I don’t know if that’s better for me. That’s already four different treatment options and I am ONLY ONE PERSON. You cannot tell me that testing four to six times a day is all I am allowed. In the long run, that would kill me.

I did not choose to require these extra necessities just to live my life. At least make it easy for me to manage my tools in the way that works best for me.
